I tend to agree with googie, you need to check other parts of your swing and the clubface position will take care of itself. Trying to manipulate the clubface itself in the backswing is not only very difficult but also compounding whatever flaw is making you close the clubface.

Check your grip. If it is too strong the clubface will indeed be closed halfway back and at the top of the swing.

Check your right arm. Is it tight and extended? This can easily cause not only a closed clubface but a flat club path. It should be relaxed and bend normally while the shoulders drive the backswing.

Check the clubface position at address. Is it closed? It is easier than you might think to accidentally rotate the clubface as you take your grip. Have a friend look at you head on at address to confirm a square clubface.

Check your entire setup position. 90% of swing flaws can be fixed in the setup. Your alignment, pall position, grip, etc. can cause all kinds of crazy shots. Just use a mirror, video camera, or knowledgable friend to help you check these things. Remember, even the pros have to constantly monitor their setup positions to keep them square and where they need to be.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Let the toe open. Easier said than done, I'm struggling with it too.
Leaving it closed causes an over the top swing which produces a pull hook or weak fade. I know them all too well. Let the toe open, keep your right elbow (if you're right handed) closer to your ribcage. Best of luck!

Starting out with the clubface open a little bit will help, also try to weaken your grip. To do this turn your left hand (if your right handed) counter clockwise on the club.

The easiest way to open the face going back is how Ben Hogan did it-Rotate the left forearm during the takeaway. This gets the face opening, but still on plane with the left arm and wrist. Much easier than trying to manipulate it with your hands.

Why would you want to fan the club face open ? If you have the proper swing plane, lie angle and the takeaway and the back swing is smooth, the weight shift to the rear foot is correct, the hips, torso and shoulders turn in unison and you do not over swing going back. your club face will be in the proper position for the down swing, point of impact, follow through and finish. Find a copy of the May issue of Golf Digest and notice the swing sequence there in. Notice the position of the club face. Is it fanned open ?

You have too strong of a grip, weaken its by moving your grip counter clockwise.
