  1. A very interesting book. I have been following some of the players that made it through qualifying school on the PGA tour. Feinstein allows the golf fan to feel the extreme pressure of qualifying and its life long effects on the participants, either positive or negative.

  2. By Matthew W. Moran

John Feinstein is likely the most popular and widely read sportswriter of this generation. His 1986 debut book “A Season On The Brink” is the best selling sports book of all time, and Feinstein has followed that up with twenty more titles. His most recent book, “Tales From Q School,” focuses on professional golf’s infamous qualifying tournament, with a special emphasis placed on the 2005 tournament.

Feinstein’s reputation as a top-notch journalist is well-deserved. He is also a columnist for “The Washington Post” and a regular commentator for NPR, having become renowned for his erudite opinions on the world of sports. However, it won’t take more than a quick perusal of “Tales From Q School,” to realize that Feinstein seems to be resting on his laurels. The book reads more like a rambling magazine piece than a well-structured story. The trademark Feinstein anecdotes are here aplenty, but the story lacks a narrative flow and even repeats itself at times.

John Feinstein’s weakest effort is still decent enough that “Tales From Q School” might make a good gift for the golf lover in your family. However, this recent release doesn’t nearly compare with some of the author’s classics.

  4. Excelent book – thourgoughly enjoyed reading it, gives an insight into the Q school environment putting a human face on it. It is fascinating reading about the players that you watch on television and it is brought to life well by the author

  5. I was very eager to read the trials and tribulations of the aspiring golfer. To me, the book was anti-climatic as Mr. Feinstein tells you the results of the more famous heart breaking stories in the first several chapters. I enjoyed the behind the scenes explanations of what it takes to become a professional golfer, but he seems to repeat the qualifications over and over.
