It’s hard to believe it, but over 90 percent of all amateur golfers have a slice that’s difficult to control. It is caused, most often, by an outside-in golf swing that is the result of a poor grip or swaying, but there are many other reasons why it occurs. Strangely enough, the more you try to control a slice, the worse it gets. If a slice is preventing you from shooting lower scores, here are a few things you can do to make it go away. Step 1 During your downswing, keep your head steady so that it does not move towards your target. This is one of the most chronic problems most amateurs have, because by doing so, you will have your club face open at impact which will result in a slice. A swing-thought that’s helpful is for you to imagine there is a wall that starts at the front of the ball that you cannot penetrate. Step 2 Eliminate that slice by allowing your hands to release at the point of impact. Good tennis players use a lot of topspin on the ball, and the same thing is true in golf, although they use a racket and you use a golf club. The next time you go to the driving range, hit some shot where your bottom hand crosses over your top hand at impact. You will not only reduce the likelihood of slicing the golf ball, you will be increasing the speed of your club head. Both will lead to lower scores and more fun on the golf course.
